Lahore, 12 October 2025 — On Day 1 of the first Test between Pakistan and South Africa at Gaddafi Stadium, Pakistan closed at 313 for 5. The home side managed to reach a respectable total despite a soggy return for star batter Babar Azam.

Early Wickets, Stumble at the Top
Pakistan, electing to bat first, lost Abdullah Shafique in the very first over. That brought Shan Masood and Imam-ul-Haq together. They steadied things. The pitch offered some turn, and South Africa’s spinners began to find footholds.
In the second session, spin troubled Pakistan’s middle order. Imam tried to push for a century but fell just short, caught at short leg after scoring 93. That wicket was a big blow to the home side’s momentum.
Babar’s Return Disappoints
Babar Azam came in with high expectations. This was his return to Test cricket, and hopes were high. But he could only manage 23 runs before being dismissed.
Rizwan and Salman Agha Rescue
After Babar’s exit, Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha held firm. They built a 114-run partnership for the unbroken 4th wicket.
At stumps, Rizwan was 62 not out off 107 balls. Agha was 52 not out off 83 balls.
South Africa’s Bowling Effort
The Proteas lacked two key players: captain Temba Bavuma (injured) and lead spinner Keshav Maharaj (unavailable for this Test).
Senuran Muthusamy was the pick of South Africa’s bowlers. He picked up 2 wickets, including an important one late in the day.
Simon Harmer also bowled well, though less spectacularly in terms of wickets.
Summary & Outlook
At 313/5, Pakistan are in a decent position. Their top order had trouble, especially with Babar failing to make a big return. But Imam’s strong knock and the rescue act by Rizwan and Agha give them hope.
South Africa will hope to strike early on Day 2. The pitch seems to assist spinners, so their spin attack will be key.
If Pakistan’s lower order adds more, they can set a challenging target. But if early wickets fall, their strong start could be undone.
